. He then spent the 1995-96 year as an assistant coach at UCLA.

In 1996, he was named the head coach at his alma mater, Marshall. He went 115-84, but after two losing seasons, he resigned under pressure to return to the small college ranks at Charleston. He was also named a "special assistant" to the school's president.
