Bobby was still keen to continue fostering and offered a place to Sarah Thompson, who needed to stay in town to attend school.Greg accepted her but was less happy about Tug O'Neale, a troublemaker who reminded Bobby of her younger self, moving in.Greg was coaching the school football team and his decision to allow enthusiastic but unskilled Damian Roberts on the team resulted in arguments between Tug and Damian's friend Shane Parrish

Fiona smoothed things over but then she and Greg did embark on an affair.The attempt at infidelity was fairly disastrous, with both Nick and Damian finding out, and Fiona left town after a few weeks.Greg confessed all to Bobby, who walked out on him but eventually forgave him.

Greg and Bobby rebuilt their relationship and were even talking of starting a family when Bobby was badly injured in a motorboat accident. After she had been on life support for weeks, the doctors announced she was brain dead and Greg agreed to the machines being turned off.He was furious when he learned Adam, who had been driving the boat, had been charged with improper navigation over the incident and threw him out of the house, refusing to forgive him.

Greg decided to take a job as a lorry driver but it meant he was unable to look after Sam.He placed him in Donald's care, supposedly as a temporary measure, but later gave permission for him to be fostered by Michael and Pippa

He was not seen again until 2000 when he returned to town to visit Sam. Although he had let him down by cancelling an earlier visit, he asked Sam to come and live with him and Sam agreed.However, Donald doubted Greg's competence as a father and, when he saw how much Donald cared for him, Sam changed his mind and decided to stay in Summer Bay.
