He was a founding director of Imprints Booksellers in Adelaide in 1984 and was co-proprietor of the business until his appointment as Executive Director of Arts SA in 2004. In 2008 he was appointed Acting Chief Executive of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and following the appointment of a new Chief Executive remained with the Department as Acting Deputy Chief Executive - Departmental Affairs. He was appointed permanently to that position in September 2009. On 1 April 2011 Greg was re-appointed Acting Chief Executive after it was announced that Chris Eccles will be joining the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet as Director-General.
He has served widely in the community, especially in the arts, where his board and other appointments have included the Feast Gay and Lesbian Cultural Festival and the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust. He has also served on the Council of the University of SA, the Dame Roma Mitchell Trust Fund for Children and Young People, and the Board of Management of the Don Dunstan
