Greek legislative election, 1989 (June)
Encyclopedia
Legislative elections were held in the Hellenic Republic
on June 18, 1989. At stake were 300 seats in the Greek parliament, the Voule.
The liberal-conservative New Democracy
party of Constantine Mitsotakis
defeated the Panhellenic Socialist Movement
(PASOK) of Andreas Papandreou
. However, New Democracy could not form a government, despite its 5% lead in the popular vote, because of the electoral law that the previous PASOK government had voted into effect before the elections requiring a party to win 50 percent of the vote in order to govern alone.
