Encyclopedia
Grayson Sinclair is a fictional character
in the British ITV
soap opera
Emmerdale
. He was played by Christopher Villiers
.
, he is the eldest son of Rosemary King
and brother of Alasdair Sinclair.
He first appeared at a family dinner party with Perdy, Alasdair and Sadie. Grayson next appeared at Alasdair and Sadie's wedding. He and Perdy were also present when Sadie and Rosemary agreed that Sadie would annul her marriage in exchange for the Sinclair business that had the most sentimental value to Rosemary.
Grayson and Perdita got together, following the death of Perdy's brother, Harry. Harry died in action during the Bosnian war. He and Grayson were best friends. Rosemary told Tom King
that Grayson and Perdy met at Harry's funeral and fell in love.
, that Grayson was unfaithful. He had a gambling habit, which saw him sell some of Rosemary's possessions to Rodney Blackstock
. He made friends with Diane Sugden
and she accompanied him to casinos until Perdy asked Diane to take Jack, not Grayson.
Grayson is an experienced solicitor advocate. He advised Bob Hope
and the other villagers about how they could sue King and Sons for the show home collapse but later changed sides and defended King and Sons when they were charged with corporate manslaughter.
Grayson recently found out Perdy has had five miscarriages. During a heart to heart, she confessed and seemed to resent him for his philandering.
When Grayson was away, Perdy slept with Matthew King. Worried she was pregnant, she told Grayson as it was possible Matthew was the father. The pregnancy was a false alarm but the damage was done, making Grayson and Matthew despise each other. Matthew started calling Grayson, "Larry", a reference to comedian Larry Grayson, which Grayson hated. Matthew called him until Grayson told him not to, leading to them fighting about it. After that, Matthew called Grayson "Larry" behind his back.
In December 2006, Paul Lambert
rescued Grayson from a homophobic attack in Hotten. Paul asked Grayson why he had been attacked and Grayson confessed that he is bisexual. Paul, Grayson and Perdy bonded over the events of that night and became good friends.
Grayson's other friends were Diane Sugden
and Katie Sugden
. He and Diane bonded initially over trips to the casino and Diane took over as Grayson's motherfigure when Rosemary left the village. He and Katie became friends after Perdy bought a share of Katie's stable business. She was closer to Perdy initially but got to know Grayson when she visited Mill Cottage and he helped her with her divorce.
Matthew was the only person to believe Perdy was telling the truth about Rosemary and her illness. He visited her and convinced her to admit to her "illness", knowing she had more chance of being discharged by the hospital. Perdy told Grayson Rosemary was responsible but he didn't believe her until the family doctor backed her up. Grayson confronted his mother and threw her out so she moved in with Paddy Kirk
briefly but disappeared after arguments with Grayson, Matthew and Zak Dingle.
Fearing what Rosemary would do next if she returned to Mill Cottage, Perdy stayed with Matthew. After Rosemary's confession, Grayson got Perdy's kitten back and begged Perdy to give their marriage another chance. She agreed, much to Matthew's disappointment and, as they had been looking into how they could have a child of their own, despite Perdy's hysterectomy, Grayson began contacting surrogacy agencies.
When Perdy found a negative pregnancy test, she and Matthew started making plans for her to
leave Grayson. On going home, she found Grayson and Katie celebrating. Katie was pregnant but had done the test too early. Perdy was confused - she wanted her baby but also wanted Matthew. In the end, she decided to stay until Katie had the baby and then she, Matthew and the baby would be a family. Unfortunately Grayson heard them discussing this and framed Matthew for Rosemary's murder. When Perdy found evidence that Grayson had framed Matthew, she insisted they go to the police with a letter from Grayson to Rosemary, confirming that she was alive and well, living in Miami. Matthew was released and Perdy moved into Home Farm with him.
Gray warned Perdy she would have a fight for access, let alone custody, and told Matthew why Perdy and Katie had been fighting. Matthew was horrified to discover that Perdy knew Gray had been responsible for his imprisonment and that she had blackmailed him and threw her out, telling her he never wanted to see her again. She moved in with Paul and Jonny as Paul was the only friend she had left in the village.
In late March 2008, Katie was due another scan and suggested inviting Perdy. Gray persuaded her not to and decided he wanted to know the sex of the baby. The midwife told them it was a boy, assuming Katie was the child's mother - something she was unhappy about. Following the scan, Gray and Katie went to the pub and told Diane. Jonny, Paul and Perdy saw them there and Perdy lost her temper when she found out that they had been for a scan without her and that the baby was a boy. Trying to stop Perdy physically attacking Gray, Paul and Jonny carried her outside.
During the row that followed, Gray told Perdy about his one night stand with Paul shortly after she was released from the psychiatric unit. She attacked Gray and was arrested for assault, cautioned and released the next day. Perdy was angry with Paul but now understood his refusal to back her up when she told Katie about Gray's bisexuality. Jonny met her alone and she decided to leave the area as Gray had taken out a restraining order. Katie didn't think it was necessary but Gray insisted it was in her and the baby's best interests.
Gray offered Perdy access if she dropped her custody case but Katie refused to even consider it, worried about Perdy's stability. Katie discovered Gray was seeing Perdy when he rushed off to a "meeting" with a client but left a document behind. Realising Gray was meeting that client and thinking it was important, Katie asked Chas to take her to the same place. On arrival, Katie and Chas realised it wasn't an office and saw Perdy and Gray together. Katie realised why he was suddenly talking about Perdy and, not wanting them to see her, asked Chas to take her home.
A few days later, she visited Perdy, wanting answers. Feeling some sympathy for Katie, she warned her that she couldn't trust Grayson and implied he only wanted her because she was pregnant. Katie wondered if the baby would be safe with Grayson and Perdy as parents.
To make sure Gray and Perdy didn't get suspicious, she agreed Perdy could have access and join them at the antenatal clinic but needed money for the London trip. Gray was very well off so Katie told him her mother had lost her life savings and asked him if she could move in with them. He agreed, but knowing she and her mother didn't get on, suggested he pay her mother's debts. Katie agreed and asked him to give her the money, telling him she would send it to her mother. Claiming to be worried about finances, Katie suggested saving money by asking Perdy to move in. Grayson agreed so Perdy returned to Mill Cottage and started work at the stables.
Unfortunately Katie realised that Paul and Perdy weren't friends any more, seeing them after they had been arguing. Neither would explain so she tricked Jonny into telling her about Gray and Paul's one night stand. She confronted Perdy and threatened to confront Gray but Perdy begged her not to, scared Gray would revoke her access. Katie agreed and decided to give Perdy custody, providing they leave the area. She didn't tell Perdy but told Jonny after he became suspicious when he saw Perdy with a lot of baby stuff. He told Paul and Paul visited Gray. He said enough to confirm Gray's suspicion that Katie was up to something so he checked up on her. He found out she'd changed the date of the birth and still had the money meant for her mother.
He sank into self-pity and got drunk constantly. Chas found Gray in a state and told Diane. She and Paul made him realise he had to pull himself together if he wanted to be a father and look for Perdy and the baby. Unfortunately Paul had promised Jonny that he wouldn't see Gray so when Jonny saw them together, he was upset. Gray saw him and, wanting to hurt Jonny, hugged Paul and thanked him for his help.
Gray had gone out, looking for fun, but was caught by the police. They charged him with indecent behaviour and released him. While still drunk, Gray locked himself and Katie into Victoria Cottage and demanded she tell him where Perdy was. Katie refused and escaped but he came after her, witnessed by Paul and Diane. He thought they would support him but Paul hit him for destroying his and Jonny's marriage. Nearly everyone in the village saw this and when Donna
and Ross
arrived, Gray wanted Paul arrested. Unfortunately nobody backed him up.
Ostracized, Gray left the next day, warning Matthew and Chas he would be back. Chas told him to stay away from Katie unless he wanted to join Rosemary in the churchyard. Matthew laughed and told Gray that he could have had it all but it was his own fault that Katie left him and gave his baby away.
Jimmy and Carl arrived later and he took them hostage too. They tried to calm him down and
Carl even tried talking to Grayson as one father to another but Grayson sneered at Carl for being a part-time father. Furious, Carl walked towards Grayson, daring him to shoot, which he did. Thankfully, Carl wasn't seriously injured. Jimmy and Matthew tackled Grayson, giving Katie the chance to grab the gun. She looked like she would shoot Grayson, worrying him, but Matthew persuaded her not to. Grayson allowed Katie to phone an ambulance but she called the police too and Grayson was arrested while trying to escape from Home Farm. Just before they left, Matthew gave Grayson the photo Perdy had sent him of her and the baby, for which Grayson thanked him.

Marriage difficulties
Grayson and Perdy’s marriage was always rocky but the final straw was when he had her sectioned. Unaware Rosemary's "care" of Perdy was responsible for her illness, Grayson struggled to cope. Perdy refused to see him so Paul acted as go-between. In Perdy's absence, Rosemary took over running Mill Cottage, looking after Grayson and helping Katie run the stables. Consequently she and Rosemary became friends. Rosemary saw Katie had feelings for Grayson and encouraged her, seeing a chance for Grayson to move on. She agreed, much to Matthew's disappointment and, as they had been looking into how they could have a child of their own, despite Perdy's hysterectomy, Grayson began contacting surrogacy agencies.
Rosemary’s “murder”
In October 2007, Rosemary’s handbag and passport were seen under a bush when Edna was out walking Tootsie. A few days later, Paddy Kirk found them. He took them to the police and, in her diary, on the day of her disappearance, they found an entry “MK MF”, which they guessed meant “Matthew King, Manor Farm". When the police went to the farm, they found coffee cups with Matthew and Rosemary's fingerprints and traces of her blood. They concluded Matthew asked Rosemary to meet him at Manor Farm, made her a coffee and killed her. Matthew was arrested and charged with Rosemary’s murder and released on bail.Katie's surrogacy
During October 2007, Perdy told Katie about her and Grayson's plans to hire an American surrogate. She suggested this because American law favours genetic parents while British law favours birth parents. Katie offered to be surrogate and they agreed. Katie's friend, Chastity Dingle, worried about Katie's motives. She and Matthew King tried talking Katie out of it and Matthew even offered to double the money that Grayson and Perdy would pay her but she refused. Touched by Katie's offer, Grayson asked her to move in with them. He wanted to look after her but Perdy was annoyed about her lack of time alone with Grayson.
When Perdy found evidence that Grayson had framed Matthew, she insisted they go to the police with a letter from Grayson to Rosemary, confirming that she was alive and well, living in Miami. Matthew was released and Perdy moved into Home Farm with him.
Custody agreements
Grayson was devastated to lose Perdy but Katie was furious. Worried about being left with the baby, she was angry and felt that Perdy had broken her promise so she threatened to have an abortion. Perdy told Grayson to stop her or she would report him for withholding evidence - in this case, a green cardigan with a missing button. Perdy also used this to blackmail Grayson for sole custody. Unfortunately for Perdy, Grayson told Katie about the blackmail and she let Perdy think she was unhappy at Mill Cottage, spending more time at Home Farm. Perdy was thrilled and, feeling guilty, confessed to the blackmail. Katie persuaded her to burn the cardigan and then revealed she and Gray were now an item and intended to keep the baby. Perdy was so angry, she attacked Katie. They had a fight and Katie was taken to hospital, fearing a miscarriage. Luckily mother and baby were fine.Gray warned Perdy she would have a fight for access, let alone custody, and told Matthew why Perdy and Katie had been fighting. Matthew was horrified to discover that Perdy knew Gray had been responsible for his imprisonment and that she had blackmailed him and threw her out, telling her he never wanted to see her again. She moved in with Paul and Jonny as Paul was the only friend she had left in the village.
Revenge
When Katie came home, Perdy dropped a bombshell herself - Gray's bisexuality. Katie didn't believe her, particularly when Gray accused Perdy of saying anything to get custody. He confessed later, knowing that he had to tell Katie the truth. Diane warned Gray he couldn't keep that secret if he wanted a future with her. Katie was shocked but told Gray that like Perdy, she would accept it as part of his past but unlike Perdy, would not allow him to cheat on her.In late March 2008, Katie was due another scan and suggested inviting Perdy.
Perdy's return
A couple of months later, Perdy's solicitor and a friend of Gray's, visited. Richard told Gray that Perdy wanted custody and it would be best if they settled out of court, giving Gray Perdy's address in a rough part of Hotten. Feeling sorry for her, he got her a nicer flat and paid the rent as she couldn't afford it. Not wanting to upset Katie, Gray didn't tell her but not being a very good liar, Katie became suspicious and wondered if she could trust him.Gray offered Perdy access if she dropped her custody case but Katie refused to even consider it, worried about Perdy's stability.
Katie's plan
Chas and Katie were angry about Gray and Perdy's behaviour and Chas suggested Katie move out immediately but she decided to stay and that she would get the baby adopted in London. In the meantime, she tested Grayson by suggesting they let Perdy have custody. Grayson was unhappy and stormed out in a huff, making Katie think Perdy was right. She asked Chas to go with her and be her birth partner and Chas agreed.
Leaving storyline
Gray was angry about Katie's deception and confronted her at the stables. He demanded she give him his son but Jonny intervened so Katie got away but realised she was in labour. Matthew found her in the office at Home Farm and wanted to take her to the hospital but Katie insisted on collecting Perdy first. Unfortunately for Matthew, they didn't make it to the hospital before Katie gave birth. Perdy delivered the baby on the back seat of Matthew's car. Perdy left Gray a message, telling him their baby had been born, horrifying Katie when Perdy told her. Katie gave the baby to Perdy and insisted they leave the area, convincing her (with Matthew's help), that she and the baby would be better off alone. Matthew gave Perdy the money Katie had set aside for her and distracted Gray so they could get away. Gray went after them only minutes later but Perdy was already en route to the station. He got the hospital staff to phone the police and reported his son had been kidnapped. Katie told them Perdy was the baby's mother - she was just the surrogate - and gave them Perdy's mobile number. She confirmed that she and the baby were fine and asked them not to tell Gray where she was.He sank into self-pity and got drunk constantly.
Return
Grayson returned in September, and took Matthew hostage. Matthew had returned early from the village fair and, hearing a noise in the office, called out - thinking it was Katie. He went to check and found Grayson with a gun. He was also waiting for Katie. When she returned, Matthew tried to stop her coming into the office but failed and Grayson held them hostage. He demanded they tell him where Perdy was but they refused, knowing Grayson would fight Perdy for custody. Grayson even threatened to shoot Matthew but Katie still refused to tell him what he wanted to know.Jimmy and Carl arrived later and he took them hostage too. They tried to calm him down and
