GBK are expanding rapidly. In the UK 23 new stores opened in 2008 which brings the total number worldwide to 50+.
They introduce unusual items, such as wild boar, buffalo and venison burgers to their menu.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen is also expanding by way of franchising in the Republic of Ireland and there it is run by an Irish-owned restaurant group. They currently have seven restaurants trading with the bulk being in Dublin.

There are further franchised GBKs in Dubai, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Greece.

The South African chicken chain Nandos took full control of the company and its sister the Real Greek in 2010, offering 74 pence for each share to previous owners. Nandos has held 27% of shares in the chain's owner, Clapham House for many years.
