Geography

Goraya is located at 31.13°N 75.77°E. It has an average elevation of 240 metres (787.4 ft). The city has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and hot summers. Summers last from April to June and winters from November to February. Temperatures in summer vary from average highs of around 44 °C (111.2 °F) to average lows of around 25 °C (77 °F). Winter temperatures vary from highs of 19 °C (66.2 °F) to lows of -5 C. On the whole, the climate is dry except during the brief southwest monsoon season during July–August. The average annual rainfall is about 70 centimetres (27.6 in).

Sports

Cricket is the most popular game in Goraya; it is played by almost every child. Other games played here include badminton, football, kabaddi, and kushti (wrestling). The town has produced famous Canadian powerlifter Harnek Singh Rai, who represented Canada in the 39th annual IPF world powerlifting championship, held at Delhi from Nov 1 to Nov 7, 2009, as an International referee and Canadian team manager wearing a red turban to match the Canadian flag. Rai is a member of Canadian powerlifting Hall of Fame. ATTA Ground is one of the only few playing grounds around Goraya, this place is being used by the locals to organise different sports tournaments, especially cricket. It is used as a football and cricket ground on a regular basis. It is also a venue for many kabaddi and football district-level events.

History

After their arrival in India, the people of Goraya ( Manchester of Punjab ) of Jats founded another village on G.T, Road between Ludhiana and Jalandhar, and named it after old principal city in Central Asia as Goraya. These people are still residing in the same area. There is a religious place in a village named Sang Dhesian. Rishi Kutiya Ram Mandir is a temple in the town. Recently two other temples — Shiv Mandir in Atta and Baba Balak Nath Mandir along G.T, Road — have been constructed. The area used to have a number of factories but very few of them survived as time passed. The area has many NRIs who reside overseas and come down on occasion, with Sahota, Bahra,Taheam's, Ghattaura, Sehmbey,Kaushal,Sharma, Punj,Dhillon,Rayat and other Lahar. families as dominant participants.

There are also very nice shops of Glass & Plywood (CHABBRA PLYWOOD & GLASS , Kumar PLywood & glass store. ) which are located on Bara Pind road . There is also one of the oldest Garments shop which is also known for providing a good quality of woolen and non-woolen products to the residents of town and nearby villages throughout the year ranging from kid's , men's garments to a wide variety of ladies unstitched ,designer suits, ethenic sarees from last 45 years. *Bitta Garments(famously known as Bitta wale)which is located near the railway crossing on its way to village Boparai Facing opposite HaRi Ram Bawa Di Hatti which is also famous for its homopatheic n desi medicines used to cure various diseases and have been a trustworthy name frm past few decades .

There is one shop which completed more than 30 years named New Way Hardware Store. G.T.Road Goraya. Mostly famous by Ghai Ki Hatti.

City also has a famous studio...Ramesh studio at rurka road side,and Saini Sweet Shop & catering services one of the famous sweet shop in rurka road Goraya.Apart from the sweet shops there are some mouth watering eating joints serving proper punjabi cuisines and some delicious western fast food in the city to be named is recently opened Kailey pizza town in Dhillon market (which offers a good variety of fast food , ABH( Amritsari bhaiyan di hatti ) ,Ajwinder Bros.(serving fresh bakery &day to day consumable products) which are located on the G.t road crossing of jalandhar to ludhiana highway .One Of the most crowded eating joints that is quite famous for its desi food like chaat bhalla , golgappas , tikki's(PAHWA CHAAT BHANDAAR.) has it's kiosk situated on BARA PIND ROAD which could easily be located between its peak hours (in evening) due to the crowd surrounding it.

The town also features few of the major industry leaders despite of the slow industry growth from last deacde the key PLayers like *Ajaco Combines AJACO combines & GNA(guru nank auto works),Zither bonet& chucks have managed a consistent growth in their business and have made their efforts in flourishment of the city in one or another way
