Encyclopedia
The Goldenrod Road Extension is a toll road
in southeastern Orlando, Florida
, United States, owned and operated by the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority
(OOCEA). It is a four-lane surface road with several at-grade intersection
s. As a result, a toll (of 50 cents for two-axle vehicles) is required to drive only the section between State Road 528
and Lee Vista Boulevard; the rest can be driven without paying.
The Extension runs from Cargo Road in Orlando International Airport
north to Goldenrod Road (State Road 551
) north of Hoffner Avenue (State Road 15
). It is not assigned a state road number, as it will be given to the City of Orlando once the cost of building the road is paid off.
From the south end, at Cargo Road, Heintzelman Boulevard continues south around the east side of the airport, including two tunnels under taxiway
s. South of the airport terminals, it curves west to meet South Access Road, which runs from the airport south to Boggy Creek Road and State Road 417
.
A five-ramp partial cloverleaf is at State Road 528
. Northward is the barrier toll, and then the Extension intersects with Lee Vista Boulevard and Hoffner Avenue (State Road 15
), with median breaks for several more intersections. Shortly after crossing Hoffner Avenue, the Extension ends at Goldenrod Road (State Road 551
), which continues north. Despite SR 551 using the older Goldenrod Road to reach Hoffner Avenue, the main route between Hoffner Avenue and Goldenrod Road is via the Extension, and so it is signed TO SR 551 from Hoffner Avenue.
Construction on the Extension began in 2001. It opened March 12, 2003, with a total cost of $38 million. The OOCEA built the road in partnership with the City of Orlando, Orange County, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority
, and several private developers in the area, in order to get it done quickly.
