After training as a general medical practitioner he set up a single-handed practice in the Docklands, the most deprived area of Cardiff, providing medical care to Somali refugees and the homeless as well as to the inhabitants of Butetown. He was appointed Professor of Primary Care at the Swansea Medical School (2002–2005) before being appointed Research Professor at Cardiff University. He is the Research Director of the Department of Primary Care and Public Health, and Chair of the Clinical Epidemiology Interdisciplinary Research Group. His research interest is in how to develop and implement shared decision making

In collaboration with Professor Adrian Edwards, he manages a multidisciplinary research group of researchers focused on translating the best available research evidence into clinical practice and by enhancing the patient-clinician encounter (www.decisionlaboratory.com).

Glyn Elwyn has developed the OPTION scale for measuring the extent that that clinicians involve patients in decision making and he co-edits ‘Shared Decision Making in Healthcare: Evidence-based Patient Choice’ 2nd Edition, Oxford University Press 2009.

He co-leads the International Patient Decision Aids Collaboration with Annette O’Connor, which has published quality assessment criteria and a measurement instrument for tools to support patient participation in decision making.

Glyn Elwyn collaborated in the development of the Normalization Process Theory
