Global Entrepreneurship Week
Encyclopedia
Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) is the world’s largest celebration of the innovators and job creators who launch startups that bring ideas to life, drive economic growth and expand human welfare.

During one week each November, partner organizations (23,952 in 2010) http://unleashingideas.org/sites/default/files/upload/Impact%20Report%20Text%202011%20%5Bpages%5D.pdf in 118 countries conduct a broad range of activities, events and competitions (37,561 total in 2010)that are designed to promote some level or form of entrepreneurial activity. At a minimum, the activities connect participants to potential collaborators, mentors and even investors.

GEW 2011 is scheduled to occur from November 14 – 20, 2011.

The initiative kicked off in 2008, launched by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Carl Schramm, the president and CEO of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Since then, it has grown to 118 countries and directly engages an average of 5.9 million people each year (the number of individuals involved in 2010 was 7,252,344).

Global Entrepreneurship Week enjoys the participation and support of presidents and prime ministers on every continent, including: President Barack Obama (US); Prime Minister David Cameron (UK); Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Israel); President Anibal Cavaco Silva (Portugal); Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Canada); President John Atta Mills (Ghana); and, numerous ministers focused on advancing economic growth (see ‘VIPs and Celebrities’ below for a list).

Objectives

Global Entrepreneurship Week’s stated formal objectives are:

• Inspire. GEW introduces the notion of entrepreneurial activity to those who have never considered it as a career path while motivating aspiring entrepreneurs to launch new startups.

• Connect. GEW facilitates connections to help build and expand networks across national boundaries—unleashing new ideas at the intersection of cultures & disciplines.

• Mentor. GEW creates an environment conducive to the sharing of ideas and experiences that are invaluable in moving from ideation to launch.

• Engage. GEW provides a platform for thought leaders to work together in fostering an entrepreneurial ecosystem—examining research, public policies and successful approaches to promoting startups and growth.

Launch

Representatives from 37 countries were on hand when Global Entrepreneurship Week was first formally announced in November 2007 by Carl Schramm, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation, and Gordon Brown, then the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Included in those 37 countries were the first 18 Host organizations to officially commit their countries to the campaign:

• Croatia

• Germany

• Greece

• Netherlands

• Peru

• Poland

By November 2008, Host organizations in 77 countries had officially signed on—and 3 million people participated in 25,022 events and activities. Over the next two years, the initiative grew to include 104 countries—under the guidance and direction of the Public Forum Institute in Washington, DC, and Enterprise UK in London.

Hosts

Each country that participates in Global Entrepreneurship Week designates a host organization to lead the campaign (in rare instances, two or more organizations share this responsibility). Logo

The GEW logo is multi-colored compass with rounded typeface of ‘Global Entrepreneurship Week’ coming from the top right section. The color spectrum, which includes 26 colors, represents GEW’s international span. The compass shape adheres to the notion of navigation and the direction of entrepreneurship in the future. Many of GEW’s partners fuse their own logo with the compass in order to demonstrate a joint collaboration towards a global initiative.
