Parliamentary career

Elmes is a longstanding member of the Liberal Party

and is now a member of the LNP.
He was the Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability from April 6, 2009 and was the Deputy Opposition Whip (August 12, 2008 - April 5, 2009) and the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to Shadow Minister for Environment and Multiculturalism(September 21, 2006 – August 12, 2008) prior to that.
Elmes was appointed the Shadow Minister for Police and Corrective Services from November 2010, following a Langbroek Shadow Cabinet shuffle.

Mr Elmes is also a member of the Integrity, Ethics and Parliamentary Privileges Committee from 9 February 2010.
