History
The Girabola was formed in 1979, being contested by 24 teams in four groups of six. In 1980, the fourteen best placed clubs of the previous season entered the competition, and this format lasted until the end of the 1990 season. The last edition disputed by fourteen clubs was in 1990. In 1991 and in 1992, two extra clubs competed, but it was cut back to twelve for 1993 and 1994. In 1995, it was once again increase to fourteen teams, which three points being awarded for a win, instead of two. In 2010 the number of clubs was again extended to sixteen teams.2011 Girabola members
