. It is served by a publicly accessible 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) walking trail. A boardwalk offers wheelchair access avoiding a hill climb and Lakeshore Road. This small lake was named after Alex Gillies, a prominent figure in the history of the city. In 1915, the lake was about three times its current size. During the summer a swimming area is designated on the northwest side of the lake. Picnic areas and public washrooms are also available, the beach area also smells terrible. In the winter, skating is often available in the southwest bay.
