in 1886. From 1887 to 1893 he served on geological surveys.
He was assistant professor of paleontology
and stratigraphic geology at Cornell from 1894 to 1909, and afterward full professor. In 1895 he became proprietor and editor of the Bulletin of American Paleontology.
