Germán Gutiérrez Cueto was a Mexican

. He joined the Academia de Artes
in 1968 and belonged to the founding members.

by his cousin María Gutiérrez Blanchard in Spain from 1916 to 1917. After a short visit of the Academia de San Carlos he continued his studies of arts through self-study. He was married to Lola Cueto
with two daughters. Together with Lola he went to Paris
from 1927 to 1932, where they got familiar with the local art scene, especially with the artist group "Cercle et Carré". In Paris they had their first contact with hand puppet
design and puppetry
. Back in Mexico, he turned towards abstract sculpture. They also founded a puppet company and toured through the country with their puppet show. Together with Leopoldo Méndez, Manuel Maples Arce
and Fermín Revueltas Sánchez
he established the Estridentistas
group. After the break-up of Lola Fuego in 1936, he married María Fernández Galán.
His daughter Mireya
from his first marriage is also a well-known puppeteer, writer and dramaturg.
