History

The college was established during the formation of Ontario’s college system in 1967. Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology were established on May 21, 1965 when the Ontario system of public colleges was created.

Programs

Georgian College offers a wide range of programs in Business and Computer Studies, Transportation Studies, Engineering Technology, General Studies, Design and Visual Arts, Health Sciences and Human Services, Hospitality and Tourism and Post-graduate Studies.

Barrie Campus

The main Campus is located on a 140 acres (57 ha) site on the north-east edge of Barrie. The campus serves almost 6,000 full-time students and over 28,000 part-time students.

Buildings and features

A recent addition to the campus is a new Student and Athletic Centre with a tournament-sized gym, a fitness centre, climbing wall, café and lounge with a patio. A renovation of the engineering technology building was just added.

. The UPC has been partnering with universities since 1997 and as of 2011, serves over 2400 students. The construction of the Centre for Health and Wellness will ensure Georgian has the capacity to expand its University Partnership Centre to offer even more degree and advanced-degree level studies.

The Barrie Campus is also home to the "Sadlon Centre for Health and Wellness". Opened in 2011, this $65 million, 165000 square feet (15,329 m²) facility will allow Georgian to double its current 1,500 health program students to 3,000 and allow students to pursue health and wellness related certificates, diplomas and degrees, including advanced degree programs. It will also be home to a variety of health care services teaching clinics open to the public, as well as leading-edge laboratories, and technology-enhanced classrooms.

The recently constructed "Centre for Sustainable Technologies" is also located in Georgian College's Barrie Campus. This new $8 million, 18000 square feet (1,672.3 m²) facility opened in 2009 and is home to construction and energy-related programming and skills training. The Centre serves as a learning lab with technology and systems that demonstrate where the future of the industry is headed on all building projects.

Barrie Campus Residence

The Barrie Campus is the only campus that offers a full on-campus residence. The residence houses approximately 525 students, which includes 16 live-in residence life staff (15 Resident Attendants, and the Manager of Residence Life). There are also 2 dual bedroom rooms for students with disabilities. Each floor (there are 8 floors) has its own "common room" which has a TV and several couches. During the summer this residence becomes Summer Suites which is a hotel, although a few students remain in the building for summer education.

Orillia Campus

The Orillia Campus is located in a wooded area just off Highway 11 at the southern end of Orillia. On-site facilities include a 150-seat theatre, racquetball court, gym and weight room. With just over 1,000 students on the campus, it is easy for newcomers to become acquainted with staff and faculty, and students are enthusiastic about the warm and friendly atmosphere they encounter.

The programs at the Orillia Campus are primarily in the Health Sciences and Human Services field, including the popular Veterinary Technician and Dental Hygiene program. Other programs include Police Foundations, Law and Security Administration, Child and Youth worker, plus several post-graduate programs.

Owen Sound Campus

Owen Sound campus offers a total of 14 full-time programs and a variety of continuing education (part time) courses.

The most notable feature of the campus is the renovated Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre. The 20000 square feet (1,858.1 m²) training centre recently underwent an $8.5 million renovation, which makes it the most technologically advanced marine training centre in the country. The GLIMTC will be used to certify professionals already in the marine industry and to train students in the Marine Engineering Technology and Marine Technology-Navigation programs. The graduates from this program have an average annual starting salary of more than $60,000.

Midland Campus

Midland campus is a dynamic regional campus of Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, dedicated to providing quality education and training opportunities to North Simcoe.

Canadian Automotive Institute

Georgian College is also home to the Canadian Automotive Institute, the only one of its kind in Canada. The CAI offers diploma courses in Automotive Marketing and Automotive Marketing (Bilingual). In addition to these programs, the CAI also offers a bachelor degree in Automotive Management. Students of the CAI hold North America's largest outdoor Auto Show every year with a show date now in June.

Canadian Aviation Institute

Description

Georgian's three-year Aviation Management Diploma Program is designed to give students knowledge and hands-on experience in Aviation and Management as well as providing students co-operative work experience in the Aviation industry. A variety of aviation courses provide students with a solid understanding of the aviation industry in Canada and around the world. Students are given the opportunity to pass the examination to receive their Restricted Aeronautical Radio Operation License. Management courses are designed to give students an understanding of management practices and procedures in order to be prepared for future promotional opportunities.

Careers

Georgian graduates are employed by NAV CANADA, Lester B. Pearson Airport and the Ministry of Natural Resources and other aviation related companies. Graduates of the Aviation Management Program have landed exciting careers in: Airline Management, Airport Management, Airport Planning, and Flight Dispatch. Government Aviation agencies
