On January 20, 2004, Schiavelli was nominated by President George W. Bush
to a seat on the United States District Court for the Central District of California
vacated by Lourdes G. Baird. Schiavelli was confirmed by the United States Senate
on June 24, 2004, and received his commission on July 8, 2004. He served in that capacity until his resignation from the bench on October 5, 2008.
Schiavelli then returned to private practice in Los Angeles.
