Political career

Sondes was elected Member of Parliament

 for Kent East in 1868, a seat he held until 1874. The latter year he succeeded his father as fifth Baron Sondes and entered the House of Lords

. In 1880 he was created Viscount Throwley, of the County of Kent, and Earl Sondes, of Lees Court in the County of Kent.

Family

Lord Sondes married Charlotte, daughter of Sir Henry Stracey, 5th Baronet, in 1859. They had several children. He died in September 1894, aged 69, and was succeeded in his titles by his eldest son, George. Lady Sondes died in June 1927.
