Genetic Information Research Institute
Encyclopedia
The Genetic Information Research Institute (GIRI) is a non-profit institution that was founded in 1994 by Jerzy Jurka. The mission of the institute "is to understand biological processes which alter the genetic makeup of different organisms, as a basis for potential gene therapy and genome engineering techniques."http://web.archive.org/web/19981203120148/http://www.girinst.org/ The institute specializes in applying computer tools to analysis of DNA
and protein
sequence information. GIRI develops and maintains Repbase Update, a database
of prototypic sequences
representing repetitive DNA from different eukaryotic species, and Repbase Reports, an electronic journal established in 2001. Due to the growing importance of Repbase in genome studies, GIRI hosts International Conferences devoted to Genomic Impact of Eukaryotic Transposable Elements http://www.girinst.org/conference/index.html.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms . The DNA segments that carry this genetic information are called genes, but other DNA sequences have structural purposes, or are involved in...

Protein
Proteins are biochemical compounds consisting of one or more polypeptides typically folded into a globular or fibrous form, facilitating a biological function. A polypeptide is a single linear polymer chain of amino acids bonded together by peptide bonds between the carboxyl and amino groups of...

Database
A database is an organized collection of data for one or more purposes, usually in digital form. The data are typically organized to model relevant aspects of reality , in a way that supports processes requiring this information...

Séquences
Séquences is a French-language film magazine originally published in Montreal, Quebec by the Commission des ciné-clubs du Centre catholique du cinéma de Montréal, a Roman Catholic film society. Founded in 1955, the publication was edited for forty years by Léo Bonneville, a member of the Clerics...
