History

Prvá písomná zmienka o obci Gemerská Panica sa datuje do roku 1247, kedy sa nazývala Ponyth. V ďalšom historickom vývoji sa jej názov menil nasledovne: z roku 1291 je písomne doložený názov Inferior Panych, z roku 1336 Olsoupanich, Felseupanych, z roku 1383 Kys, Nogpanych, z roku 1808 Panitowa, z roku 1920 Panita, z roku 1927 Gemerská Panita, z roku 1948 Gemerská Panica. Po maďarsky sa obec úradne nazývala Gőmőrpanyith.

Po roku 1881 bola obec administratívne začlenená pod Gemersko - malohontskú župu; pred rokom 1960 pod okres Šafárikovo, kraj Banská Bystrica; po roku 1960 pod okres Rimavská Sobota kraj Stredoslovenský.

Obdobie feudalizmu a kapitalizmu: V 13. storočí je doložená existencia dvoch Paníc a to Vyšnej v roku 1247 a Nižnej v roku 1291, ide však o staré osídlenie. V roku 1427 bolo v oboch 32 port. Spustli za tureckých vpádov. Za Sághyovcov sa v 16. storočí zlúčili. Gemerská Panica patrila viacerým zemianskym rodinám. V roku 1828 mala 95 domov a 644 obyvateľov Zaoberali sa poľnohospodárstvom, v 19. storočí pracovali aj ako murári na okolí. Tradičné zamestnania sa zachovali aj po roku 1918. Medzi stavebnými robotníkmi mala rozhodujúce postavenie organizácia Červených odborov, ktorá v roku 1929 zorganizovala čtrajk. V 30. rokoch bolo intenzívne hnutie nezamestnaných; v roku 1936 bol hladový pochod. V roku 1938 – 1944 bola obec pripojená k Maďarsku. Mnohých v ilegalite pracujúcich komunistov odvliekli do koncentračného tábora. Po oslobodení maďarskí obyvatelia vysídlili a prisťahovali sa sem repartrianti z Maďarska. V roku 1945 bola po prvý krát v histórii obce založená slovenská škola.
