Encyclopedia
Gary Airport/Clark Road is a South Shore Line
commuter station
serving the city of Gary, Indiana
. It is one of three NICTD electric train stations in Gary, and serves the Gary/Chicago International Airport
, although it does not provide direct access to the airport. NICTD gives the address as being on Clark Road near 2nd Avenue, approximately 1 miles (1.6 km) from Airport terminal, although it's actually on the corner of 2nd Place, one block south of the given location. Gary International Airport gives the station as being 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the airport terminal.
The station itself consists of a single platform north of the tracks and three Plexiglas shelters. The station is a flag stop, so passengers must alert the conductor in advance if they want to get off and activate a strobe light flag stop signal if they want to get on.
Parking is available on both sides of the tracks. The parking lot on the southwest corner of Clark Road and 2nd Place is paved, while the shorter parking lot on South Bend Avenue isn't. Access to Gary Airport is available via shuttle service. The airport hasn't had any commercial flights since at least October 10, 2009, which limits its usage considerably.
