Matthews joined UCD in 2008 after being awarded a sport scholarship at the University. He achieved immediate success with UCD as they won the inaugural A Championship that season. Matthews made his first team debut for UCD in 2009 and took both First Division and Under-20 League winners medals that year. In UCD's 2010 Premier Division campaign, Matthews was restricted to just 3 appearances that year but won his second A Championship medal as UCD took the title. Matthews parted company with UCD at the end of the 2010 after making 17 appearances for the club.
