The name Gajra also refers to a community of traders originating from the state of Rajasthan in India .The name originated from a traders of renown in the Rajasthan - Sindh belt known as Seth Gajhmal , he is thought to have gained this title for the Kings of sind at the time due to his effort in providing regiments of elephants - known as Gaj in the region - to the ruling kings which helped them repel attacks from the afghan and Mughal invaders from the northeast . There is also a temple dedicated by him to the popular deity Ganesh , the elephant headed god in Jaisalmer .

People with the last name Gajra or Gajrah refer to Path of the elephant and his progenies also carry names which have distorted into Gajria .

The Gajra is an ornament that is purely meant to decorate a hairstyle and does not generally aid in holding a bun in place.
