- Gainesville High School was awarded the National Blue Ribbon award for 2010. The Blue Ribbon award is considered the highest honor an American school can achieve.
- Gainesville High School has been recognized as a State School of Excellence.
- Under the guidance of Pam Ware, the drama department has been honored as one of 50 high schools chosen to participate in the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2005, 2008, and 2011.

Athletics
Gainesville High School competes under the name the Red Elephants. They are the only school in the country with that mascot. They received that name in the 1920s when the announcer announced the football team was coming on the field looking like a herd of "Red Elephants". (This was well before the more publicly known unofficial nickname of The University of Alabama Crimson Tide.)2009 Football Season

Gainesville threw a TD pass as time expired in the Georgia Dome to pull within one. Coach Bruce Miller opted to go for two and the win. The pass sailed to the endzone, and just as it appeared it would be successful, a Peach County defender tipped the ball. The Trojans defeated the Red Elephants 13-12 to take the Class AAA State Championship.
2010 Soccer Season
The Gainesville High School Boy's Soccer team capped off a perfect season with a 2010 GHSA AAA State Championship, their first state championship since 1998. The Red Elephants defeated Woodward Academy War Eagles 5-4.Notable alumni
