Gabe Alberro
Encyclopedia
Gabriel Alberro is an American underground artist, writer, rap singer, and director. He was born in Miami, Florida and began his indie career writing short stories and poems and making his own comic books.

Early life

Alberro was repeatedly mentioned by age 7 in The Miami Herald, where he won many awards from the Dade County Youth fair for his artwork and short stories, and while attending a fine arts school in his teens, recognized as a “young spirited artist with great potential” by congresswoman Ileana Laten-Ross.

He began making films between the ages of 13–14 years old and began recording his own music that year, with school mates Jokes Yanes

(Emmy winner and director of the video for hit rap song “Lean like A Cholo”) and J Bishop (indie actor and former host of international hip hop TV show “The Roof”); Alberro's music still features prominently in their works.

He then moved and took permanent residence in Las Vegas, NV, where Alberro attended school at Valley High.

In his first year there, he was picked up by manager Melani Smith-Ismail, wife of football legend Rocket Ismail, and began recording and writing in Los Angeles for his second group with partner Tony “Typhoon” Lima and completed their first album “FLAVAH of BEHAVIA”, set to be released on a major label; though none had signed yet, many were interested and bidding. Some of the people around him at the time supporting his momentum included singer Tamia, ex-wife of Lionel Ritchie, Brenda Ritchie (who intended to co-manage him) and superstar Jamie Foxx.

Several hip hop music producers of considerable stature at that time were slated to supply production for Alberro, including Sir jinx from The Lynch Mob, KG from Naughty By Nature and others.

He then had a severe nervous breakdown and walked out on all the deals, stating very casually, “We are just not going in the direction that I want to go.” He returned briefly to Miami and took a meeting with then head A & R at Island/Def jam Records and former Miami Sound Machine drummer Joe Galdo, whom, while claiming Alberro's voice was “not credible” to continue on his own solo projects, offered him a job writing for Island artist “Mother Superior”. He declined. Next, Alberro attended college for a few years at The Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale, during which he was praised by many professors as 'an artist to be watched' and 'a future millionaire'.

He graduated college and headed out to Providence, Rhode Island for the next few years to develop as a sketch artist, painter and poet. While there, he wrote two screenplays, one entitled 'Mr. Never Gunshy', the other 'Finnegan’s Wake' stealing its name from a local pub. He attempted to shop both scripts and was rejected by many Hollywood studios with much vigor. He also around that time met and became good friends with singer/songwriter Colin Carthen. They began recording music on a 4 track in a Providence apartment they shared during a brief college stint (during which they hosted a raunchy radio show for the college network entitled 'Headstrong Nonsense' from which they were eventually banned for shocking themes.) The show was later reproduced under the same title, a little bit less obscene and subsequently, became a staple of Rhode Island College.

UBNAWKSHIS

The music they laid on the 4 track was the foundation for a group called 'UBNAWKSHIS' (phonetic for Gabe's nickname given to him by former ex-girlfriends, OBNOXIOUS); Carthen played the guitar and produced keyboards for three or four songs that featured on each UBNAWKSHIS album. Alberro used a voice from the pit of his stomach as a therapeutic release, a growl, and then would split into very melodic choruses. He'd always sing his choruses, even in the early days, when it was unheard of for rappers to sing.

Alberro then mailed his recordings to former producer of Black Market Records ”Endangered Species “, JULIAN “DEADBEATZ” RODRIGUEZ better known at the time as RIP the DEVIL; Rodriguez took the melodic sound of Colin’s guitars and soulful singing, mixed with Gabe’s raspy voice, earthy lyrics and catchy songs and blended them with his rough, dark and ominous beats. Alberro had done the artwork for the album cover for Rodriguez' group “Illminded” which spawned DIZ and the group Militia, who had the hit “BURN” with Red Ant Records around that time. Rodriguez prompted Alberro to come out west (Northern Cali) and what ensued was the founding of Avalanche Entertainment (landing and rooting in LAS VEGAS once again) by Rodriguez and Alberro with the help from Tony Lima from the FB days; what also was a result of the artistic melding, were 3 albums, while obscure, in limited release, and never reaching the greater masses, all well received by critics who found them.

UBNAWKSHIS produced three very interesting concept albums, 'Antikz of the Ragged; which was released in 2003. 'The Tour of Johnny Taurus' released in 2005. And 'All in Vein' released in 2007.

In 2007, after not seeing much success, Avalanche Entertainment and the group UBNAWKSHIS, disbanded. Las Vegas Weekly wrote several positive articles on Alberro and the UBNAWKSHIS sound, but it was late in the game. Rodriguez continued on to begin making and scoring his own controversial documentaries, while Colin Carthen continued to book gigs up and down the coast of California while recording his solo music. He recently released an album called “Here but Long Forgotten” which is a mix of somber soul, pop and acoustic melodies.

Avalanche Entertainment also co-produced videos “Weary” and “Medissin” for UBNAWKSHIS, as well as videos for punk trio ZEROFINGERS including a mini-documentary and the video for the remake of Frank Sinatra's "Lady Is A Tramp" which Alberro also directed.

Projects

Gabriel Alberro has done artwork for several underground and indie bands and sold his work at venues nationwide. He then partnered with Beatdown Squad rapper/producer Eddie “MASS” Cortez and legendary music mogul Henry Stone (out of Miami) to release an album entitled “Enamorous” under the name BIG_NOX in 2008. Two videos were produced for the album:
FANTASIES (produced and directed by former co-founder of FB and AVALANCHE, Tony “TYPHOON” Lima) and SAY WHAT U WANNA SAY (feat. MASS), directed by Matty Sparks and produced again by Lima for Faultline Productions in Tampa, FL.

Although its style was new world and “refreshing”, the album was not properly promoted and therefore did not do well. Alberro put together a “Greatest Shitz” in 2009.

ALBERRO co-wrote and acted (with actor/writer J.Bishop) among many other Indie artists in his directorial debut Trifecta.

He currently paints morbid art, is writing his first darkly humorous novel and has plans to shoot even more bad films. Gabe Alberro grew up surrounded by fighting and dysfunction. He has had problems with drug addictions and trauma of early domestic violence which plagued him throughout his life and hindered his career from blossoming in the fashion it should have, commercially. His demons are reflected consistently in his art, his music, writing and now his films.

He has had very little connection to his biological family and spends most of his efforts raising his twin sons, Alexander and Michael born in 2003.
