, Graciemag developed out of the prior "Jornal Gracie" (Gracie Newspaper) project, which Carlinhos launched in 1990, publishing five issues that year.

In 1994, shortly after establishing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Confederation (CBJJ), Carlos Jr. called upon Luca, who already held a position in the CBJJ, to help revive Jornal Gracie, which had been on hold; in order to cover the CBJJ’s first tournament.

In July 1996, after covering and participating in the inaugural Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, Luca Atalla resigned from his post on the CBJJ to devote himself entirely to Jornal Gracie. With the help and tutelage of Ricardo Azoury, a renowned photographer who photographed the maiden event and provided a scathing critique of the Jornal Gracie newspaper to Luca, Jornal Gracie evolved into a new, more serious endeavour, Graciemag, which focused entirely on Jiu-Jitsu

, and was sold in news stands throughout Brazil and internationally only through subscriptions.

In 2002, Graciemag went through a conceptual transformation when it became a men's magazine, featuring scantily clad women on the cover and dealing with a variety of subject matters, from health to technology. In order to make up for the space mixed martial arts news lost to the new content, the publisher released NOCAUTE magazine, which exclusively covered mixed martial arts. Not long thereafter the regular men's content of Graciemag was scrapped, and was replaced with Jiu-Jitsu techniques and lifestyle and training material meant to help teachers and students perfect their style and skills, which remains a fundamental part of the publication's content to this day.

In 2006, Luca Atalla fulfilled his long-time dream of publishing Graciemag in both English and Portuguese. Hence the Gracie Magazine Association was born, as a means of distributing the magazine worldwide. The association is a distribution network involving subscriptions and retail sale of the magazine in martial arts gyms and academies where the greater part of the readership congregates.

In February 2010 distribution in the United States was extended beyond the martial arts gyms of the Gracie Magazine Association when the magazine began to be sold in bookstores across the country. Not long thereafter, in August of 2010, GRACIEMAG was transformed into a monolingual magazine, with the Brazilian edition limited to the Portuguese language and the American edition, the English language.

With the introduction of the single-language print, a mixed martial arts supplement was added, as well. In Brazil, the Mixed Martial Arts magazine NOCAUTE was wrapped into the Portuguese version, maintaining the original name for the supplement. In the United States, the content from NOCAUTE was wrapped into the English version under the title CHOKE MMA.
