Background

In August 2010, the Sugababes began work on their eighth studio album. In February 2011, Heidi Range confirmed the recording of "Freedom", and claimed that it could well be the lead single from the album. On May 18, 2011, the group announced that they would premiere "Freedom" during a festival date in Morocco

 in June 2011. Following the track's first live performance, a snippet appeared online on June 1, as part of an advertising campaign for the Nokia N8

Promotion and release

On July 10, the band premiered the song for the first time in the UK, performing it live at the T4 On The Beach Festival in Weston Super-Mare. A second teaser appeared online on July 22. On August 1, the song received its first radio play on BBC Radio 1

. The radio edit does not include the dubstep breakdown as featured in the album version. On August 15, the band announced that the single would be released via Digital Download on September 25, 2011. However, "Freedom" failed to chart on the Top 100 Airplay charts in the UK.

On 22 September, four days before its scheduled release date, "Freedom" was cancelled as a pre-order on iTunes and instead released as a free download to Amazon.
