Fred Papas was a captain
in the German
SS during World War II
. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross
(in recognition of extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership) while he was a second lieutenant
and a company commander in the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division in December 1944. Papas survived the war and died on the 2 December 1984.
