 activist and former councillor, was also a fiddle player and a contemporary of Michael Coleman. Fred was one of the most popular of the South Sligo musicians, renowned for his wit and humour as well as his highly individual fiddle playing. Fred played with many musicians from the locality, but was perhaps best known for his superb duet playing with Peter Horan

. Other musical partners included Jackie Coleman, James Murray, and Jimmy Murphy. Fred died in January 1986 and a monument to his honor stands outside Killavil church.
