Murphy grew up in Crosshaven
, Co. Cork, Ireland, and began his playing career with Crosshaven RFC
. In his final year of Secondary School however, he went on to play with Christian Brother College Cork where he won the Munster Schools Senior Cup, defeating Rockwell College in the final.
He went on to play for Munster before joining Leicester Tigers in 2006 finishing his first season at Leicester having appeared in both the Guinness Premiership
and Heineken Cup
finals.
He moved to Connacht
for the 2008/09 season. He has been on occasion appointed captain for Connacht and has signed a contract extension until the end of the 2012/13 season.
