He was born the son of Francis (1674–1721) and Mary (née Pendarves) Basset. His father was High Sheriff of Cornwall
in 1708.
He and his wife Margaret (daughter of the politician of Sir John St Aubyn, 3rd Baronet
) had seven children - Francis
