Anderson was the son of Roger Anderson, of Jesmond, who was Sheriff of Newcastle in 1612, and his wife Anne Jackson, daughter of William Jackson, of Newcastle. He was sheriff of Newcastle in 1641. In the Civil War, he "was a devoted loyalist" and as a result was subsequently fined £1200, sequestered, imprisoned, and stripped of his knighthood.
