Plot summary

Thirteen-year-old Jonah has always known that he was adopted, and he's never thought it was any big deal. He has a sister named Katherine. Jonah has also a new friend named Chip who is also thirteen. Chip doesn't know that he is adopted. Jonah and Chip begin receiving mysterious letters. The first one says, "You are one of the missing." The second one says, "Beware! They're coming back to get you." As later found, a ghost, or time-traveler from the past wrote these letters as a warning to them.
Jonah, Chip, and Jonah's sister, Katherine, are plunged into a mystery that involves the FBI, a vast smuggling operation, and an airplane.

Characters

  • Jonah Skidmore - Thirteen-year-old Jonah Skidmore is adopted. He has a sister named Katherine and a best friend whose name is Chip.

Jonah has brown hair—presumably light brown—and pale skin with occasional freckles. He has big eyes and dimples. He is tall.
  • Katherine Skidmore - Jonah's twelve-year-old sister. She can be very stubborn at times, but loves Jonah and will do anything for him.

Katherine has wispy blond hair, brown eyes, and a ski-slope nose. She is slim, and we can assume she is at least average height or taller because of a line from the book saying she "shot up," when Jonah compares her to how she was before in his memory.
  • Chip Winston (Charles Haddingford Winston III) - Thirteen-year-old Chip is adopted. He is Jonah's best friend and has a crush on Katherine.

Chip has curly blond hair, long skinny legs, and "nostrils that flare out a little." Like Jonah, he is tall too.
  • Angela DuPree - Former Sky Trails Airlines employee. Was the first to find a plane full of babies that ended up being historic figures from the past. Is tall, athletic, and dark-skinned.
