Fort Thorn was a settlement and outpost located near present day Hatch
, New Mexico
, United States. An agency for the Apache Indians operated nearby. The post was built of adobe and opened in 1853 before being closed in 1859. It was located near an extensive marsh, and malaria was a serious problem there, and caused the post's eventual closure. One of the main units operating from Fort Thorn were detachments of the Regiment of Mounted Rifles. Fort Thorn was the scene of a skirmish between Union Soldiers and men of the Sibley expedition in early 1862. The site of most of the fort was washed away by a flooding of the Rio Grande
in 1889.
