and the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile
It currently carries a purse of $250,000 and is a Grade I
event.
Inaugurated in 1980 at the Belmont Park
racetrack in Elmont, New York
where it remained through 1983, the Forego Handicap was initially run a distance of eight furlongs (one mile). From 1982 to 1999 it was raced at seven furlongs then for 2000 through 2002 at six and a half furlongs before reverting to the seven furlong distance in 2003.
This race is named for the great Forego
