History

In March 2009, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Department announced that, due to a serious financial shortfall, they were considering closing and "mothballing" a number of state parks. Flaming Geyser was one of the parks on their self-proclaimed "hit list," but it is unclear whether all the parks so listed would, indeed, be closed. Since that time, a funding mechanism has been developed using voluntary donations added to driver's license renewal fees, so Flaming Geyser and the other parks are no longer being threatened with closure.

Geography and geology

Within the conservation area are the Flaming Geyser State Park, Kummer Bridge Area, the Black Diamond Heritage Area, the Old Town of Franklin Heritage Area, the Hanging Gardens Area, the Walter A. Jellum Area, Kanaskat/Palmer State Park, and Nolte State Park.

480 acres (2 km²) with over 3 miles (4.8 km) of river shoreline.
