The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) was established in 1991 as a non-profit organisation that represents the interests of the health and fitness sector across the UK, including both private and public sector organisations.
Their main aim is to get more people – more active - more often. They are doing this through their school, community, and business programmes, such as MoreActive4Life, part of the Government’s Change4Life
campaign, which aims to get children and adults understanding the benefits of physical activity and healthy eating – and how the fitness industry can help.
The FIA’s 2,500 members are suppliers and operators in the fitness industry and by associating with the FIA, they can form partnerships with local schools and businesses.
Business and schools become more motivated and healthy through the programmes the FIA offers, and the Government’s national health and activity targets are met – helping to combat the 40% rise in childhood obesity in the past ten years. ‘go’ is one of the FIA’s current school programmes that targets 15 and 16 year-old girls (a group that often disengages from Physical Education) and links them to their local gym or leisure centre. The FIA provides guidance to its members on how to plan an effective programme for this group whilst still benefitting their business, and they also provide practical support materials that outline activities that motivate young girls
‘active at school’ is for ten to 15 year-olds and aims to get them enjoying an active lifestyle through a variety of exercises that cater for all abilities.
‘active at work’ is a programme that links work places with local gyms over a three month period to get staff active in a gym environment. Evidence has shown that employees who meet their target 30 minutes of activity five times each week are more productive with less absenteeism - thus helping a business’ bottom line.
Fit for the Future is a year-long pilot that the FIA manages in conjunction with five Local Authorities and the Department of Health. The pilot is subsidizing gym and leisure centre memberships for 5,000 youths aged 16 to 22 – hopefully removing the cost barrier for people in deprived areas to engage in physical activity. Participants pay £5 per month so long as they attend the gym or leisure centre an average of 12 times over three months.
To be accredited as an FIA Member Club or Leisure Centre, the club must adhere to a Code of Conduct, which is of industry standard.
