Development started in 1993 and that makes File Commander one of the few surviving text interface mode orthodox file manager (younger than DN and Volkov Commander, but older that FAR, which was released in 1997). Functionality was extended with such features as support of regular expressions in file selection, powerful editor is undo/redo capabilities, etc.

In 1998 the OS/2 version was selected as "The Best Disk/File Utility for OS/2" by the independent OS/2 e-Zine magazine.

Current version 2.40 is also available for various Unix-like
