Ferndale is bordered to the south by 8 Mile Road, to the north (west of Woodward Avenue) by Oakridge Street, and (east of Woodward Avenue) by 10 Mile Road. To the west it is bordered by Republic Street (south of Nine Mile Road), and Hyland Street (north of Nine Mile). To the east it is bordered by Stauber Street.

The city was the host of the "Motor City Pride" Street festival, which over 35,000 attend. Ferndale was the first city in Michigan to elect an openly gay mayor, Craig Covey, on November 6, 2007. Because of the city's population base, popular nicknames include "Fashionable Ferndale," and "Fabulous Ferndale".

In 2010 Ferndale had a population of 19,900.
