Felipe Dulzaides’ is an artist whose work includes video, installations, photography, assemblages, neon, performance-actions, drawings, social sculptures and concept based public art projects. The range of his video work expands from single channel videos to video installations and documentaries.
Born in the mid 60’s in Cuba
into a family of prestigious musicians and writers; his father was a pianist, bandleader and mentor as well as a significant figure for the development of Jazz in Cuba. They carry the same name.
Dulzaides studied drama at the Instituto Superior de Arte
of Havana
(focusing in experimental theater and the theories of representation discussed by Jerzy Grotowsky in his influential book Towards a Poor Theatre), documentary and street photography at Miami Dade Community College and received a MFA from the New Genres department at the San Francisco Art Institute
.
Many of his works uses autobiographical experiences to address themes like emotional stress associated to displacement and the need of reinterpreting the past. Dulzaides also has develops several projects that explores the relationship of public space and architecture to ideology and politics.
Dulzaides work has been featured in a variety of contexts including contemporary art museums, public spaces, galleries, art fairs and the Gwangju Biennial (2008), the California Biennial (2008) and the Havana Biennial
(2009). He has received prestigious awards that includes the Cintas Fellowship, Creative Work Fund, Art Matters and the Rome Prize
among others.
