In 2001, at the age of 20, she landed a summer job with CNN in New Delhi

. She was then a second-year radio and television student at (then) Ryerson Polytechnic University. As per a photo caption in the GTA Today newspaper of May 11, 2001, she wrote to every bureau CNN had and most required a credit course she didn't have by then, except Miami and New Delhi.
"I chose New Delhi because it's on the other side of the world," she said.
She started that job on Monday, May 14, 2001.
