in Science education at the tertiary level. In 1949, Raffles College combined with King Edward VII Medical College in the establishment of University of Malaya, and two departments in the Biological Sciences, the department of Botany and the department of Zoology, were added in the Faculty of Science. Since then, the University has undergone several phases of expansion.
To date as on 2009, the faculty comprises six main departments. These are: Biological Sciences, Chemistry
, Mathematics
, Physics
, Pharmacy
and Statistics
and Applied probability
. On top of these six departments, there are also key programmes and key affiliated research centres such as: Food Science & Technology Programme, Computational Biology Programme, Quantitative Finance Programme, Special Programme in Science, Institute for Mathematical Sciences and Centre for Computational Science & Engineering.

Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of quantity, space, structure, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns and formulate new conjectures. Mathematicians resolve the truth or falsity of conjectures by mathematical proofs, which are arguments sufficient to convince other mathematicians of their validity...
, Chemistry
Chemistry
Chemistry is the science of matter, especially its chemical reactions, but also its composition, structure and properties. Chemistry is concerned with atoms and their interactions with other atoms, and particularly with the properties of chemical bonds....
and Physics
Physics
Physics is a natural science that involves the study of matter and its motion through spacetime, along with related concepts such as energy and force. More broadly, it is the general analysis of nature, conducted in order to understand how the universe behaves.Physics is one of the oldest academic...
