The club changed its name to Fútbol Club Cartagena and takes over the presidency of the club Luis Oliver Albesa, he starts with a difficult period when the Cartagena is hit by economic problems and came close to relegation. Being saved from folding by local entrepreneur Francisco Gómez Hernández after 2002–03, the club consolidated itself in level three, and achieved another promotion
