Eye Movements In Reading:

It was found in the late 19th century by a french ophthalmologist, Emilo Javal, that when a human is reading his or her eyes do not move continuously along a line of text, but instead they move rapidly (saccades) with paused short stops (fixation). the more often the eyes have to pause for fixation, the slower the reader reads. A young reader that's just starting to read makes an average of two stops (fixations) per word, which means reads or recognizes less than one whole word at each stop.
