, such as minerals, petroleum (oil), or gas. The term does not generally encompass the industries of forestry, fishing, agriculture, animal husbandry, or any others that are or might be capable of continuing harvesting and regeneration. By their nature, they harm the land they are taken from, and are generally considered as producing unacceptable environmental damage. Intrinsically, they can not form part of sustainable development.

Sometimes, the term has been also used for activities such as hunting or fishing, that could be converted into renewable development, as well as those that could not, such as mining.
