The construction of the road received higher priority after Poland was selected as one of the hosts of the Euro 2012 championships, since it would serve as a direct connection between three of the four Polish cities hosting matches: Poznań, Wrocław and (in part) Gdańsk

. However, plans to finish the whole road by 2012 have proven too optimistic, and it is planned to be under construction when Euro 2012 is held. Only a few additional sections of the road should be open by the Spring of 2012 according to current plans, including a 36 km (22.4 mi) section from Poznań to Gniezno
