. The population was 1,136 at the 2000 census. Exmore was named after the number of railroad stops left until reaching Cape Charles, the southernmost point of the Eastern Shore peninsula. There were 10 more stops at this point, thus "X-More." The same website also states another popular theory behind the town's name - that it was named for Exmoor
