The station was opened by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company as Steele station in 1862. It was renamed Steele Nord in 1897 or earlier. Between 1925 and 1927 it had been renamed Steele Hauptbahnhof, but in 1950 it was renamed Essen-Steele, a delayed response to Steele's absorption by Essen in 1929. On 27 May 1979, it was given its current name.
It is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn lines S 1 and S 3 every 20 minutes and five bus routes: 164 (every 10 minutes), 170 (every 20 minutes) 174 (every 10-20 minutes) 184 (every 10 minutes) and 363 (every 30 minutes), operated by Essener Verkehrs-AG.
