She made her literary debut with the novel Irlanda in 1998. It has been translated into several languages. The French version of the novel, translated by Eva Calveyra, won the Millepage Prize in France. As of 2007, an English translation of Irlanda is underway. Irlanda, published in 1998, is Espido Freire's debut novel. It tells the story of Natalia, a fifteen-year-old girl with a strong imagination. Natalia has two sisters one of whom, Sagrario, has recently died after a long illness.
