Gilliland was set to remain as executive producer through season nine...like so many, he was under the impression that the show's eighth season would be the last. He had remained on the show for a total of four years, longer than any other executive producer on the show. Roseanne asked him back to help write and run the final episode, which he did as a favor due to his respect for the show.
